The Education and Training Act 2020 amended the primary objectives of school boards, one of which is:

The school gives effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including by

• working to ensure that its plans, policies, and local curriculum reflect local tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori, and te ao Māori; and

• taking all reasonable steps to make instruction available in tikanga Māori and te reo Māori; and

• achieving equitable outcomes for Māori students.

One of which is: Demonstrate commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand.

• Demonstrate commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand

• Understand and recognise the unique status of tangata whenua in Aotearoa New Zealand

• Understand and acknowledge the histories, heritages, languages and cultures of partners to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

• Practise and develop the use of te reo and tikanga Māori

At Target Road School, we are focussed on developing this key area for our teachers and wider community.

Board of Trustees: Planning professional training opportunities to understand and give effect to the Education and Training Act 2020.

Leadership: Working alongside MAC (Māori Achievement Collaboration) to develop an Education Plan for Te Ao Māori at TRS. https://www.mac.ac.nz/programs

Kāhui Ako/Community of Learning : Local schools are working to establish next steps between Kaipātiki Kāhui Ako.

Teachers: A group of teachers are working alongside an expert that is providing professional development with classroom support, improving confidence and growth of Te Reo Māori.

Learners: Engaging in Te Reo lessons, learning about New Zealand history and our place. Our learners are also active participants with TRS practices such as karakia, waiata, kapa haka, mihi whakatau.
